At the second crime scene - The Burial site - As a Ranger approached to investigate the rising smoke he noted the maroon station wagon turning out of the dirt road. Bishop headed south. Soon the 5 bodies were found in the 4 foot hole but no identification could be made at the time. Along with the 5 bodies also found was a scorched 2 1/2 gal gas can, pitch fork, some dog tracks and a shovel with a partial sales tag " OCH HDW ". The victims were placed in the hole in the following order, Geoffrey 5 was first in the hole, then Brenton 10, followed by Annette 37, William lll 14 and Lobelia 68 last on top.

One of my first questions I had about this case is...Why take the bodies anywhere? It served no purpose. And if he would have thought about it, once the bloody scene is discovered with or without the bodies the police would start a search for him anyway. So why take the time to attempt to "hide" the bodies. But it really wasn't an attempt to hide anything. You don't hide something and light a fire to it so everyone for miles around can see it. He was trying to make his past life disappear, to vanish into ashes. Consider if he commits the crime on Mar1 1976, the scene is not discovered until Mar 8 about the same time the buried bodies were identified and connected to the scene. If he had left the bodies in the home then there is no need to take that long drive to NC and then to the Smoky Mountains. He could have just left on his escape on Mar 1, 1976. To me this entire scenario of taking the bodies, digging a hole that didn't even fully cover the five bodies...Covering the bodies partially with dirt then burning them was a reflection of a very controlling hateful mind. His driving force was anger and revenge. The completion could only end in fire. The family that only had value because he gave them everything was worthless to him . Like trash you incinerate. Garbage. The route from the Bishop home to the burial site- the site address is only approximate. Some think Mr Bishop did not use toll roads. Attachments:

Mr Bishop makes a clean getaway from the burial site and heads south. At the burial site detectives will pour over the site and find the 5 bodies along with a partially scorched 2 1/2 gal gas can, pitch fork, some dog tracks and a shovel with a partial sales tag " OCH HDW ". The bodies were put in the hole in the following order, Geoffrey 5 was first in the hole, then Brenton 10, followed by Annette 37, William lll 14 and Lobelia 68 last on top. The tag on the shovel eventually was found to come from POCH'S Hardware Store in Bethesda, MD., but employees could not identify any of the 4 pictures of the deceased- the 2 women and 2 youngest boys. The oldest boys picture was not presented probably due to severe facial injuries. On March 8, 1976, a concerned neighbor called the police to check on the Bishop home. The Bishop's hadn't been seen for over a week and the newspapers were piling up on their front steps that were dotted with dry blood. The gruesome scene discovered now connected to the burial site. The examination of the bodies showed 4 of the family members murdered with blunt force head trauma-Wife Annette, sons William lll, Brenton and Geoffrey. Lobelia, the elderly mother, may have been suffocated. Mr Bishop had a murder warrant on his head. His family was brutally murdered, he and his station wagon were missing - his fingerprint was on the scorched gas can. They obtained information from his credit card company and found out the same day he buried the bodies, Mar 2nd, he drove south to Jacksonville, NC and purchased a pair of tennis shoes. Interestingly, the clerk who sold Mr Bishop his shoes remembers him, his dog and also mentioning he seemed to be with a "dark skinned " lady who was holding onto the dog leash. This was the LAST CONFIRMED SIGHTING of Mr Bishop.

On Mar 18, 1976 Mr Bishop's station wagon (DFL 896) was discovered parked in the Great Smokey Mountains. The area was searched thoroughly for any trace of Mr Bishop. Scent dogs found a few sites, but that's it. In his car was a shotgun & shells, his Serax medication bottle, shaving kit, a box of dog bones, a jacket, a tarp and a lot of dry blood. His spare tire well was thick with old blood. His rear view mirror had been broken off. But no Mr Bishop. No Leo. Recall the John Walsh video has excellent pictures of the discovered Chevy station wagon ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCXtzw1QSGI ). Here is the possible routes he took: 1) 8103 Lilly Stone Drive Bethesda, MD 20817 This is the 1st crime scene, Mar 1, 1976. The families home. 2) 4106 North Carolina 94, Columbia, NC 27925 Approximate address, 2nd crime scene, the burial site. Mar 2nd 3) Jacksonville, NC, Mar 2nd, he purchased a pair of Tennis shoes-LAST CONFIRMED SIGHTING with the "dark skinned" lady holding Leo on a leash. 4) Wilmington, NC, unconfirmed sightings Mar 9 5) New Hanover County, NC unconfirmed sighting at a gas station and a tavern Mar 11 6) Spindale, NC unconfirmed sighting in a Gun Shop Mar 12 7) Jake's Creek Trail, Gatlinburg, TN 37738. Approx location. Mr Bishop's car found, the 1974 Maroon Chevy Malibu Station Wagon. It could have been there since approx ?March 15, 1976. Several sites discovered with scent dogs. In conflict with the unconfirmed sightings is a statement by Mr Roy Owenby, "It had been sitting there for days, at least since March 6 when Roy Owenby of Elkmont recalled spotting it, National Park records show. Not far away was the Jakes Creek Trailhead, popular with hikers." So for me it is unclear of the exact date Mr Bishop dropped off his car by Jake's Creek. All those unconfirmed sightings don't make sense if his car was already in the Great Smokies. Here is a short article about the search in the Great Smokey's www.thegreatsmokies.net/elkmont-focus-fbi-manhunt/

So after the getaway what is still missing? Leo the dog was never found, but I guess he could be in the grave mentioned in the Part 2 video above. I have never seen any information about digging up that grave. I have speculated that the "Dark skinned" lady took Leo after Mr Bishop purchased his new sneakers. Mr Bishop bought sneakers in Jacksonville so his muddy bloody shoes are long gone, probably tossed in some landfill in Jacksonville. What else...1) His Diplomatic Passport 2) The small sledge hammer, previously pictured 3) his father's REVOLVER S&W 38. 4) His Yale class ring. Graduated 1959.

The area is remote now, and was much more so in 1976. I've read and heard about this case before, and I'm mystified about how he came to choose the burning/burial site. What familiarity did he have with the area?

And by the way also missing is Bishop's WALLET. What about his US PASSPORT? The FBI has his US passport. Unfortunately, at his office Mr Bishop could have made many false passports. I believe part of Mr Bishop's job was making passports or at least he had access to passport making. I would be surprised if he actually used the Diplomatic Passport. No one ever recalled it being used at an airport, military base etc. Besides, he could have just used any of the false passports he probably made (my speculation). If you worked for the State Dept what countries passports would you want if you were Mr Bishop? Remember, Mr Bishop's expertise was making passports. Keep in mind these passports could have been made a long time before the crime. He had been stationed in Ethiopia so perhaps he makes one for Ethiopia, but a South African passport would be my guess for Africa. For Europe, multiple Italian passports is a sure guess. Also French and Swiss passports and my personal favorite is a Croatian passport. Now, I don't believe he would feel all that comfortable in the UK, but I would bet he made UK passports also. Also a German passport is a strong possibility, he was stationed in Germany for over a year if I am not mistaken. And of course, he would have made multiple US passports. Making a passport for Mr Bishop was as easy as a high schooler writing a fake note for the teacher.

How did Mr Bishop escape the Great Smokey Mountains? There was some theory he wandered off into the Great Smokey's and committed suicide. But the Smokey's were searched for 3 days with scent dogs, helicopters and 100's of visitors were interviewed. He might have visited the visitors center but the trail went cold. It was March so it was cold, but there was no storm. One thought is he just hitch hiked out. But the newspapers and TV news was bombarded with the finding of the car and no one came forth with hitch hiker news. Mr Bishop loved the outdoors, horseback riding, motor cycle riding (his motorcycle was sold after the crime), skiing, fishing, camping, rafting etc so I am wondering if his station wagon had a trailer hitch? Could he have obtained another vehicle, towed it there and dropped it off. Parked his station wagon and walked back to the towed car and left with the tow hitched up to the 2nd vehicle? Did he still have Leo with him? He could have left Leo with the "Dark skinned lady " (5'6', medium heavy build according to the store owner) in Jacksonville, NC. The FBI never found her or the dog. Add: see grave picture above. Could that be Leo's grave? If the FBI didn't even investigate the possible dog grave then no wonder they can't find Mr Bishop. But at this point finding Leo's bones is probably a waste of resources...but it should have been done as soon as the grave was discovered. Especially since there is always a chance there is crime evidence in the grave. Dog collar identification...other stuff? Too bad it was never done.

Also there is the CIA connection theory (which I question)...There is a CIA facility not far from the burial site.

MOST OF THE FOLLOWING POSTS FROM THIS POINT ON ARE SPECULATION. My feeling about the murders on March 1, 1976 it was not planned well. He may have had an out line of sorts in his head or a so-called " plan " that he fantasized about, but it was anything but well thought out. That night all he knew was anger. He left a very bloody scene throughout the house with evidence all over. One look in the home and only one conclusion - everyone was murdered. You don't see large thick blood stains dripping down the head of a childs bed from minor injuries. Not to mention the bloody scrapes on the ceilings and scattered bone fragments lying about. It all equates to one horrible bloody frenzy. It is horrible to imagine him using his sledge hammer and smashing in the face and heads of those poor little kids and wife. He probably suffocated his mother with his own hands. This was no mental "snap", there was premeditation. He left work early, withdrew $400 dollars from the bank then purchased a shovel, pitch fork, small sledge hammer, 2 1/2 Gal gas can and filled it up at the Texaco gas station. At the next gruesome crime scene in North Carolina off Highway 94 he dug a hole, placed the bodies in then alerted anyone in the area by starting the bodies on fire. He left his finger prints on the gas can. This second crime scene seemed to be his finally. One thing about the gas can, if he was going to drive all the way from the burial site in North Carolina to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee you would think he would take the gas can with him. But the partially scorched can was left behind. My thought is the flash of fire was more than he expected and too close to the gas can so he just left the can along with the pitch fork and shovel. So he drops off the bloody station wagon in the Smokey's. Now what? 1) He is dead, either of natural causes or self inflected. OR 2) He is alive somewhere. - To me why drive from Maryland to North Carolina then to the Great Smokey Mountains just to commit suicide...it doesn't make sense. So my assumption is he didn't commit suicide and because he worked out 2-3 times per week AND always fit not to mention he is a narcissistic, most likely he is still alive. UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE HE IS STILL ALIVE.

My speculation after Mr Bishop drops off his car in the Great Smokey Mountains approximately March 15, 1976...ie, guessing. Let us assume he is alive. So where could he be ?...When you lose something, you always find it in the last place you look ...OK that's a joke. He most likely had two choices after dropping his car off in The Smoky Mountains ...1) get on a plane fast, 75% chance OR 2) 25% chance he gets in a car and drives far away where he would be safe in great surroundings. Remember his first entry in his journal, " Afoot and light hearted I take to the open road ..." The Walt Whitman poem titled " Song of the Open Road". I can see Mr Bishop driving from the Smoky Mountains all the way eg, to Mexico or even Canada, but if he did I don't see it as his final destination. There is one exception...California (drive or fly there). He was from Pasadena, Calif and knows his way around and could probably fit in well in any of the great & beautiful communities, in Southern Calif or Northern Calif etc. He could change his looks a little - basically hiding in plain sight. But I think despite having an egotistical personality he was in a survival mode decision making mind set. Now, I know he did some time in Africa but he's gonna stick out like a sore thumb in most countries there. Japan, ah...no, doubt it also. Australia... South Africa, doubt it. He could fit in there, but I don't see that Australia (or S. Africa) offers the kind of culture he is looking for. He's going to go where he can start over in wonderful surroundings that complements his cultural back ground. My thinking is 75% chance he got on a plane fast, probably to Europe. Since his escape seemed to be where he put most of his planning I am thinking he already knew where and how he was going to get to the airport. His best choice at that time would have been Atlanta International Airport. It was a large airport then only a 4 hour drive. I guess he could have gone to Knoxville TN Airport, but it is a small airport with less flights. Nonetheless, he put some thought into his escape. I am going to take a wild guess he made multiple false I.D.'s/passports which he used to get out of Dodge. In those days to get on a plane you could go right up to the check in and pay cash for a ticket or a phony credit card? You could show an I.D./passport for the manifest list and that's it. Now I am not aware how much security inspection was done then at that airport. Still missing besides Leo is his 38 cal revolver and diplomatic passport (I doubt he used it and I really doubt he left from a military base). Could he have gotten on a plane with his hand gun then? At any point I would speculate he got on a plane and flew to Europe. Supporting this are several unconfirmed European sightings. And I believe he still has the 38 S&W which I think belonged to his father. Speculation is fun ain't it.

WHAT KIND OF GUY IS MR BISHOP? P1 Growing up he was an only child, seemed to be the center of attention. Many times he seemed to glam it up for the camera. He may have become somewhat disillusioned in college. Apparently, he had to leave Yale to help out his parents who were having financial problems, Feb 6, 1958 to September 1958. Supposedly he left school to "dig ditches" (B.Bishop Oil Co.) and by the way he has a 6 inch vertical scar on his back which could be due to this heavy labor, ? work injury?-just guessing of course. I am thinking the family financial issues may have caused some resentment against his parents. He went back to school, giving up the idea of pursuing medicine. This is an oddity of Mr Bishop, he wants to go to medical school, yet it was mentioned he was only a " C " student. I think he felt entitled but at Yale poor effort is rewarded accordingly. He didn't get those easy A's he got in high school being a top football player. The only arrest I noted was for Jaywalking Oct 1, 1955 (nolle, Rec 131-301). So instead of trying to get into medical school he got married then joined the US Army. In a way this was a failure. But one thing Mr Bishop succeeded at was learning foreign languages. By the time he finished getting several degrees & completed his military time he knew English, Spanish, French, Italian and Serbo-Crotian. He may have known some German too as it was mentioned in one video I reviewed. A bona fide polyglot. Graduated from Yale University with a BA in American Studies, June 8, 1959. More to come on Mr Bishop.
